Rift Valley Children’s Village

Challenge Rift Valley Children’s Village is home to 70 orphaned children from newborn to 17.  Finding creative activities for children in a wide age range is tricky under any circumstances, particularly when we only had one day to bring all of the children together for fun. Solution The GoodMakers Street Team hosted a ‘Rec Day’ which was designed to entertain and engage all of the children and culminate in an end of day showcase.  The older kids really loved the DJ Boot Camp, and all of the children, including the volunteers and ‘house mama’s,’ enjoyed the dance workshop, which included a choreographed routine to the Kenyan pop song, ‘ African Child.’  A soccer tournament was also held, which many of the younger children enjoyed immensely. GoodMakers filmed a short documentary for “We The Change” Foundation, a primary school located in a tiny room in the heart of the Mathare slum in Nairobi. Here is one version: “We the Change” Foundation aims to inspire and to empower individuals to be the change that they wish to see in the world. Visionary founder Soiya Gecaga envisions a world where millions of lives are transformed as a result of people working together as one united global community. In many ways, Mathare is typical of a slum environment with tin roofs, people crammed up next to each other, kids roaming unattended and a sewer running openly down the middle of the road filled with human excrement. Flying Kites

Flying Kites cares for abused, abandoned and neglected children in extraordinary ways. The children under Flying Kites live in the Flying Kites leadership academy, are given medical care and provided a first-class education. In July 2011 GoodMakers will produce and film an unforgettable live music and dance festival to promote the announcement of the Flying Kites OASIS Program, which provides oversight to 20 Flying Kites children’s homes. The Dance Festival will be a cross-cultural collaboration between a well respected musical director from Los Angeles and Kenyan pop star Jimmy Gaits, and will be heavily promoted and supported by local media outlets, celebrities and politicians.  GoodMakers is excited to be teaming up with Nairobi production company Hot Sun Films, located in the Kibera slum and entirely staffed by incredibly talented filmmakers who have recently completed their own feature length film...

Spin for GOOD Through local events, competitions and radio broadcasts, DJ’s of diverse background and artistic influence unite to spotlight charity efforts. Media for GOOD Charity events and true stories filmed and then captured in multi-media format, bringing focus to current events live and online. Kicks for GOOD Max Ulaner launches holiday campaign at Method Studios in SM to collect gently used sneakers which will be painted by featured street artists and then donated to inner city youth. Food for GOOD Julia Roth bakes up batches of her famed biscotti-to-die-for, to benefit GoodMakers holiday fundraising events.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to HomeGirl Cafe of LA.
