GoodMakers taught a 5-day Digital Film Boot Camp in Sept 2011 at the Kilimanjaro Film Institute located in Arusha, Tanzania.  What an amazing experience to see how quickly the students learned, and just as quickly, applied their knowledge as they joined the GoodMakers crew for a documentary shoot at a nearby primary school.  The film course, lead by Cris Blyth, covered an intensive camera overview to give the students a realistic feel for the digital cameras that are new to the market. Or, as in the case of the Sony PF100 cameras that we had with us (Thank you Sony!), it gave them an opportunity to work with cameras that are soon to be on market. The students loved the steady arm rig that Cris Blyth demonstrated, quickly realizing that it’s harder than it looks to get a steady...

Posted on Nov 30, 2010 in Our Films - International, Our Work, Tanzania

The Foundation for African Medicine & Education, FAME, was founded in 2002 by US doctor Frank Artress along-side his wife, mental health professional Susan Gustafson. Former California based Dr Frank Artress found his purpose after a nearly fatal climb on Kilimanjaro prompted him to sell everything and dedicate himself to healing the poor, often in remote areas of the African bush in Tanzania.  His nonprofit FAME Africa, is has built a medical clinic, mobile medical clinic and now building a hospital. Production notes: We spent several weeks following Dr Frank and staff at their medical clinic in Karatu, shadowing Dr Frank at The Rift Valley Children’s Village where he conducts a 2 day clinic twice a month, and also well traveling to a remote bush area for a week of mobile medical clinic service.  This was an amazing experience...

GoodMakers Films are proponents of life long learning and shared knowledge, understanding that through the continuous exchange of knowledge and ideas we will enable better stories to be told. We have taught film labs in many countries and we also invite students from these film labs to join our crews on local shoots whenever possible, which creates employment opportunities and sustainable models for on-going employment even after we’re gone. Recently, we taught a digital film in Arusha to Tanzanian film students and local professionals who wanted to learn about the new digital workflows for production and post production. Here’s some pictures and video from this course. Onsea House Film Workshop : Production Notes & Video GoodMakers Films created a class assignment to create a promotional trailer for The Onsea House, who hosted the film lab. We provided a curriculum...
