GoodMakers filmed a short documentary for “We The Change” Foundation, a primary school located in a tiny room in the heart of the Mathare slum in Nairobi. Here is one version: “We the Change” Foundation aims to inspire and to empower individuals to be the change that they wish to see in the world. Visionary founder Soiya Gecaga envisions a world where millions of lives are transformed as a result of people working together as one united global community. In many ways, Mathare is typical of a slum environment with tin roofs, people crammed up next to each other, kids roaming unattended and a sewer running openly down the middle of the road filled with human excrement. On the other hand, there is so much life going on… Vendors selling chapati, fruits and vegetable stands, a mix of make-shift...

Alive & Kicking

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 in 2011 International Projects, GM Street Team, International, Kenya, News, Newsletter, Our Work

Challenge Alive & Kicking is located in Nairobi and makes Africa’s only hand-sewn soccer balls using an all-local staff and sourcing materials from local suppliers. Alive & Kicking has faced fierce competition in recent years, from large scale manufacturers, such as Nike and Adidas, who are able to offer soccer balls at a lesser price due to mass production using cheap labor in places such as China and Vietnam. Alive & Kicking is an amazing company that needed to increase their brand presence. The global customers would need to see the benefit of purchasing hand-crafted soccer balls from a company that employs a staff of 50 Africans and provides wages that enable them to pay for school fees and support their families. Solution GoodMakers shot a short documentary at Alive & Kicking, focusing on the craftsmanship that goes into...

Challenge Tackle Africa provides critical anti-HIV/AIDS health education through soccer drills, reaching the most poor and remote communities in Africa. Tackle Africa sought to extend their reach to slum area children, many orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS that took the lives of one or both parents. Solution GoodMakers hosted a three day intensive Community Coach training program in Nairobi for 28 school teachers, including teachers who traveled from Tanzania, along with area Oasis children’s home directors. The training was followed by a two day Soccer Tournament held in Kibera and attended by two hundred children from homes in the Kibera slum and surrounding area. The soccer tournament gave the newly trained coaches an opportunity to practice the unique curriculum taught by Tackle Africa, and the children were introduced to fun and engaging way of sharing life saving health...

Challenge Flying Kites Global is a nonprofit started four years ago by three college friends wanting to make a difference in the lives of children in the Nairobi area of Kenya.  After opening their own children’s home, Flying Kites reached out to build the capacity of other orphanages in developing countries by sharing a proven model of business operation.  Flying Kites wanted to introduce their program to the Nairobi community in a fun and engaging way that would involve some of their key member homes. Solution GoodMakers developed a high impact creative arts program that offered two weeks of intensive workshops to the youth of the orphanages. This was run by the GoodMakers Street Team and a local professional dance troop called Dashy Krew.   With the GoodMakers youth team and Dashy Krew, the children crafted dance performances and...

Update From Rehema!: Dashy Krew

Posted on Oct 30, 2011 in 2011 International Projects, International, News, Our Work

For the past three weeks, the children of Rehema Daycare and Orphan Center have been receiving a dance class every Tuesday, thanks to a collaboration between GoodMakers Films and Dashy Krew, a Nairobi-based professional dance company. The kids absolutely love the classes. As soon as we arrive, a sea of red sweaters (orange shirts and red sweaters being the school uniform) swarms us and pour into the Center’s church hall, where we hold the class. The children quickly move the benches so as to make space and eagerly wait until the music has been set up. The class usually lasts an hour and a half, although we sometimes go over as no one wants to stop dancing! The Center’s director and the teachers, too, are always happy to see us and ready to assist us with whatever we need....
